The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in Enugu State on Saturday at the Awgu Local Government Council playground held a cultural carnival as part of their camping activities.
The corps members displayed different Nigerian cultures as the audience applauded them.
They sang, danced and dressed to portray the various Nigerian cultures.
Platoon 7 emerged the overall best in the performances followed by Platoon 10, while Platoon 9 finished third.
The state Coordinator of NYSC, Alhaji Ahmed Wada Ikaka, told the News Agency of Nigeria at the event that the carnival was aimed at promoting Nigerian cultures.
“You can see the cultural display coming from different backgrounds including Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Fulani, Ibibio, Ijaw, Ishekiri, and others.
“Cultural carnival has been in the NYSC programme for four years now; with it, we entertain ourselves and revive cultures.
“It is a unity programme,” he said.
According to the coordinator, many youths are losing grip of their cultures because of western influence.
He told NAN that more than 200 corps members serving in the state studied overseas.
“This is an opportunity for them to see their cultures; they even participated with traditional attire.
“It is a cultural re-awakening for the young ones,’’ the coordinator said.
A Platoon 10 corps member, Butu Bumba, who spoke to NAN, said that the programme was worthwhile.
“I felt good and honoured when our traditional music was played at the end of the carnival; all of us from the north took the centre stage and danced to our satisfaction,’’ he said.
Bumba called for sustenance of the programme. (NAN)
