Niger: Police kill 12 bandits in gun battle

Twelve bandits terrorizing the people of Rafi local government area of Niger State, have in gun battle, been killed by the Police, vigilantes and the villagers. 

While nine of the bandits were killed in a gun battle between the bandits and the police and vigilante, three others were lynched and burnt to death by angry youths when they tried to escape. 

The incident occurred in Karaya Mahanga and Bakachi villages when the bandits tried to invade the villages at 2.30 am on Saturday. 

The bandits who met with stiff resistance from the Police and vigilantes, started gunfire against which they met their match in the team of the Police and vigilantes. 

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Wasiu Abiodun and the Chairman of Rafi local government area, Alhaji Ismaila Modibo confirmed the incident. 

According to the PPRO, the armed bandits had engaged the police and local vigilante in a gun battle at Maikujeri village less than four kilometres from Kagara, headquarters of Rafi local government area of Niger state.

He said that nine bandits were been killed during the gun battle while three others who ran towards Mekujeri village were intercepted and burnt beyond recognition by the villagers.

Also confirming the incident, Modibbo in a telephone interview urged the people not to panic.
