Information Minister Mr. Labaran Maku has mourned the passing away of Mr. Akpus John, the Editor-in-Chief of Abuja-based Citizens Mail Newspaper and former Features Editor of the New Nigeria Newspapers, Kaduna.
Mr. Maku said he received the news of the death of Mr. Akpus with shock and sadness.
He described the deceased as a core professional who served the nation diligently as a journalist and a civil rights activist. Mr. Maku recalled the enviable role they played along with the late Akpus John in the formation of Women in Nigeria (WIN), which became a strong platform for the advocacy of women rights in the country.
The Information Minister said the deceased, who was his colleague at the University of Jos and the Standard Newspapers in Jos, committed himself as a reporter, editor and Editor-in-Chief to the promotion of democracy, good governance and social justice.
Mr. Maku said in keeping with his ideal of promoting good governance, the late Akpus John chaired the Press Corps of the National Good Governance Tour Team, which embarked on a strenuous physical inspection of projects executed by the three tiers of government across the country.
He commiserated with the media industry, friends and family of the deceased and said his death was a huge loss to the nation.
The Minister prayed God to repose the soul of the deceased and grant his family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
