Mr Terungwa Igber, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Benue Chapter, says the Supreme Court ruling on financial autonomy for local governments will attract development to rural areas.

Igber said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Friday in Makurdi.

The NLC scribe, who described the ruling as excellent, said Nigeria’s rural population had been largely underdeveloped because federal allocations were not directly coming to them.

He, however, noted that it was heartwarming that local governments would now be fully in charge of their resources and manage them for the benefit of their workers and communities.

Igber said with the development, the council chairmen would now be able to undertake infrastructure projects, which would in turn benefit the rural dwellers.

All efforts to speak with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), and the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) chairpersons of Benue, proved abortive as at the time of filing this report. (NAN)
