The Lagos State House of Assembly on Thursday passed a bill to amend the state Customary Court Law, 2017, giving the court criminal jurisdiction.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the House read the bill for the third time and passed it through a voice vote conducted by the Speaker, Mr Mudashiru Obasa.
The House had on Dec. 4 adopted the report of its Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Petition, headed by Mrs Adefunmilayo Tejuosho, on the bill as its resolution.
The executive member bill seeks to empower Customary Courts to try criminal cases at the grassroots with a view to reduce impunity.
Obasa directed the Clerk of the House, Mr Sanni Azeez, to forward a clean copy of the bill to Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode for his assent.
According to the bill, the customary court will now have jurisdiction on certain criminal cases.
The House has adjourned its sitting till Jan. 22, 2018. (NAN)
