Chief Whip of the Senate, Sen. Orji Kalu, has congratulated Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her emergence as the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
Kalu, in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, described Okonjo-Iweala as a thorough bred-professional with undoubted capacity and impeccable character.
Highlighting her accomplishments, Kalu said that Okonjo-Iweala made Nigeria proud as the first African and a female to occupy the position of the Director-General of WTO in its 25-year history.
The former governor of Abia congratulated Okonjo-Iweala and urged her to keep the Nigerian flag high.
He expressed optimism that Okonjo-Iweala would bring to bear her cross national and multi-sector experience in her job.
Kalu commended Okonjo-Iweala for her achievements in private and public spheres of life, locally and internationally, adding that she remained one of Nigeria’s best.
He applauded the support of the African Union (AU), European Union (EU) and other member countries of WTO, for supporting the candidature of Nigeria’s Okonjo-Iweala.
“The emergence of Nigeria’s former Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the first African and first female Director-General of WTO is a remarkable and historic feat for Nigeria and Africa at large.
“She will bring to bear her robust cross national and multi sector experience to bear in her new role in a bid to improve trade relations among member countries.
“Okonjo-Iweala has made Africa proud,’’ Kalu said.
He urged officials of the WTO to rally support for the new head and admonished the new Director-General to sustain her exemplary leadership qualities anchored on transparency and accountability.
Kalu wished the new head of the trade body continued success in her career.(NAN)
