President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan met Wednesday in London with Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain ahead of the London Summit on Somalia which opens tomorrow in the British capital.According to Reuben Abati, the presidential spokesman their talks focused on international security, the global war against terrorism as well as bilateral cooperation in the areas of trade and economic development.
In brief remarks before the meeting went into a closed session, President Jonathan said that Nigeria will continue to collaborate with Britain and other friendly nations in the prosecution of the war against terrorism.
Jonathan assured the British Prime Minister that Nigeria was currently doing everything possible to secure the release of the European nationals who were recently kidnapped near the Nigeria/Niger border. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fostering and expanding trade and economic cooperation with Britain and other nations.
Nigeria’s president also thanked Prime Minister Cameron for inviting Nigeria to the London Summit on Somalia, saying that he looked forward to continuous and mutually-beneficial cooperation between Nigeria and Britain on issues of interest to both nations and the international community.
Mr. Cameron said that it “was a huge pleasure and honour” for him to welcome President Jonathan to No. 10 Downing for the talks. He pledged that Britain would continue to work with the Jonathan Administration on the “shared agenda of vigorously tackling terrorism
and international security issues”.
Recalling his last visit to Nigeria, the British Prime spoke of the incredible economic dynamism and progress” being made in the country, saying that Britain will continue to partner with Nigeria on bilateral, African and international issues because of Nigeria’s great importance in the comity of nations.
