Former Nigerian President, General Ibrahim Babangida on Tuesday commissioned a N1.2 billion underpass named after him in Kano city.
The project, which was constructed by the Kano state government, consists of among other things, street lights, crash barrier and diversion roads.
Speaking during the occasion, Gen. Babangida said Kwankwaso has demonstrated leadership by embarking upon projects that will change the lives of people of Kano for the better.
“With the number of projects I have seen in Kano recently, I am convinced that under Kwankwaso, Kano has undergone tremendous transformation”, Babangida said, adding “you have shown a lot of determination and desire to make what Kano state it is.
“I want to emphasize on the fact that you believe quite strongly and quite rightly too on infrastructural development and I can see it – anybody who comes here would practically see it.” Babangida has pointed out.
The former president said he is excited that Kano is the only state in the federation that has made education free for its citizens at all levels, urging other states in Nigeria, especially those in the North to emulate the shining example.
“I know your vision and with what you have exhibited in Kano, it will sell you through to the federal level,” Babangida stated, adding that he is optimistic that Kwankwaso will bring his dynamism to bear on his new position as Senator.
In his remarks, Governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso said the project was named after the former President so that future generations would not forget his contributions towards the development of Kano in particular and Nigeria as a whole.
He said the relationship between the former President and the people of Kano state has always been very warm, praying that Allah will continue to grant Gen. Babangida long life and sound health so that citizens of the country will continue to benefit from his wisdom.
Meanwhile, Governor Kwankwaso has commissioned the Shehu Ringim Boarding Primary School, constructed by his administration at Dausayi in Gezawa local government area of the state.
“Government decided to revive the boarding primary school system so as to offer our pupils strong platform to acquire knowledge”, pointing out that already, one boarding primary school have been constructed in each of the three Senatorial zones of the state
He, therefore urged people in the state to take advantage of the free education policy of his government to send their children to school so that they can become better citizens in future.
In his remarks, the state chairman, Association of Primary School Headmasters of Nigeria, Malam Nadabo Tsoho Wangara, appealed to the state government to facilitate annual increment of salaries of primary school teachers and to regularize their promotion.
