Bright Pinnan, the captain of Ghana Police volleyball team, on Saturday said their success at the just-concluded CAVB Zone 3 Club Championships was down to team work and determination.
The competition which began on April 13 had ended on Friday at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.
It had teams from Ghana, Nigeria, Benin Republic and Niger Republic competing for honours.
The Ghana Police team had defeated Nigeria Custom Service team in three straight sets of 25-22 25-22 and 30-28 to emerge champions in the male category.
Pinnan said the competition brought out the best in them and it was a great achievement to be crowned champions in the end.
“We came with the determination to defend our title which we won in 2017 in Cote D’Ivoire, and we are happy to achieve that yet again.
“It did not come easy as we had to battle hard to win, especially when playing against a Nigerian team in their home,’’ he said.
The Nigeria Customs Service team in the female category were however the superior team when they clashed with the Ghana Police women team.
The Nigerian team recorded a three straight sets victory of 25-18 25-17 25-13 to win the gold trophy and the championship prize money.
The Legacy female team of Lagos defeated Supeforce of Benin 25-15 25-21 25-22 to clinch the third-place prize for women.
Similarly, the Legacy male team beat Entete of Benin 25-18 25-19 25-20 to pick the male third-place trophy.
Meanwhile, Musa Nimrod, the President of Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF), has told NAN that the competition recorded tremendous success going by the level of professionalism displayed by participants.
“I congratulate the winners of the competition. I am impressed with the level of professionalism displayed and I am happy the championship was successfully held in Nigeria.
“We want to do more for volleyball and in my tenure I am confident that competitions at the national and international levels would be a thing of priority,’’ he said. (NAN)
