Hajia Hajara Mohammed, the Principal of Government Day Secondary School, Barikinsale, Minna, has urged the Federal Government to promulgate law banning the girl-child from early marriage.

Mohammed said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Minna.

She said that men who went into conjugal relationship with any girl that was less than 18 were abusing the girl and subjecting her to slavery.

“It is my humble appeal that our law makers should make a law regarding the girl-child education and marriage.

“It should be enshrined in the constitution that every girl must go through the secondary school system and reach the age of 18 before venturing in to marriage,” she said.

Mohammed explained that it was not possible for a girl to develop holistically ‎at teenage age.

“She knows nothing about marriage institution and it is not healthy for her reproductive health‎ because she can come down with Vesico Virginal Fistula (VVF) ‎disease at child birth,” she said.

Mohammed said that  men that were in the habit of marrying under aged girls were doing more harm to the society because the child wife would not give what she did not have to her family and the society.

She explained that with such law, parents‎ and potential suitors would desist from such act, knowing that the consequence of their action would attract punitive measures on them. (NAN)
