The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command has responded to allegations that officers attacked protesters at Utako Market earlier on Tuesday, calling the claims “false and misleading.”

In a press statement, the Police Public Relations Officer SP Josephine Adeh Anipr emphasized that the police action was taken to prevent potential looting during the protest. “Acting on intelligence, the operatives focused on miscreants attempting to exploit the protest for criminal activities,” Adeh Anipr stated. “As a responsible agency, we could not stand by and allow traders to be robbed of their hard-earned money and belongings without intervening.”

The statement urged the public to disregard the reports circulating on social media, describing them as “misleading and mischievous.” Adeh Anipr reaffirmed the police command’s commitment to safeguarding citizens’ rights while ensuring public safety.

The incident has raised concerns among residents, but the police maintain that their actions were necessary to protect the community. The FCT police command continues to monitor the situation to ensure order is maintained.
