The Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) said it has received with maximum shock, the news of unlawful arrest, detention and torture of Comrade Amaechi Anakwe, the presenter of the Democratic License, a Programme of the African Independent Television (AIT) Headquarters, Asokoro, Abuja, by the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police –in-charge of Zone 7, Abuja, Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu, today, October 2, 2014.
CLO said further it “gathered that Comrade Anaekwe is being detained for addressing Mr. Mbu as a “controversial” police officer who is. Anaekwe, as at the time of this press statement, has been under torturous incarceration for eight hours and has been denied access to his family members, including his wife and children.
Executive Director ,Comrade, Ibuchukwu Ohabuenyi Ezike said further “ CLO sees the ignoble action of Mr. Mbu as a monumental infringement on the rights of Anakwe and maintains without fear or favour that Nigerians have right to freedom of speech guaranteed under our Constitution and other local, continental and international human rights instruments, including but not limited to African Charter on the Human and Peoples Rights, United Nations Declaration on Human Rights (UNDHR), etc which no security officer no matter how highly or lowly placed can deny the people entitlement to.
“We recall that Mr. Mbu had sent his men and officers to manhandle Nigerians who peacefully protested the criminal abduction of over 200 girls of the Government Girls’ College, Chibok, Borno state, by Boko Haram terrorists as well as lecturers of Nigerian polytechnics and Colleges of Education who were billed for the National Assembly to demand a better deal for their institutions. The recent and previous illegal, notorious and unconstitutional actions of Mr. Mbu have proven the Rivers state government right that the police officer has penchant for violating human rights and instigating social unrest.
“The best action any citizen who feels that his or her integrity has been damaged is to seek redress in law courts and not to take the laws into his or her hands as Mbu does.
The statement said further ,”CLO holds that the actions of Mr. Mbu are clear infractions on the rights of citizen Anaekwe and do intend to recast our minds to odious, dark days of military despotism. We urge the Police Service Commission, the Ag. Inspector General of Police and, indeed, the Nigerian authorities to rise up to the Mbu challenge and ensure that Mbu’s poisonous wings are clearly clipped for respect for human rights to flourish.
In view of the foregoing, CLO demanded “Immediate and unconditional release of comrade Amaechi Anakwe and payment of commensurate compensation to both his employer, AIT for the criminal disruption of his services to the organization and Anaekwe for the toruture he has been unduly subjected to.
“Unconditional sack of Mr. Joseph Mbu from the Police force because his wicked activities more dangerous than the dreaded Ebola Virus and book haram are capable of corrupting, polluting and threatening our fragile democracy, and;
“Prosecution o trial of Mr. Mbu, and not the soldiers fighting boko haram with inadequate arms, for his dastardly, unprofessional and indecorous acts so as to check against the rise of future Mbu Joseph Mbu.
