A cleric, Rev. Ebenezer Nnanwata, has urged Christians to shun materialism in their service to God.
Nnanwata gave the admonition in a homily he delivered on Sunday at the Anglican Church of Ascension, Enugu.
The theme of the homily was: ‘‘The Advent of Hope to the World.’’
The cleric noted that Christians must put a lot of things aside to abide by Christ’s teachings and lifestyle.
He said: ‘‘Christians should be resolute to leave behind material things and focus on their work with God.
‘‘The purpose why man was created is to serve God; and depart from all forms of materialism and evil that follows it.’’
Nnanwata, however, reminded Christians in political offices to use their positions to advance the course of humanity.
He urged them to do as much as possible to uplift the weak and down-trodden in the society.
‘‘Wealth and position mean little when it cannot be used to touch the lives of the needy around.
‘‘The advent of hope is only coming from Christ; He has called us unto holiness and integrity in all we do,’’ he added.
The cleric prayed for peace and economic prosperity in the country, even as Nigerians are eagerly waiting for the Yuletide and impending general elections. (NAN)
