The Centre for Strategic Research and Studies of the National Defence College has called on the Federal Government to enhance synergy with the international community to address the anglophone crisis in Cameroon.
This formed part of recommendations of its Foreign Policy and National Security Roundtable on the Anglophone Crisis in Cameroon in Abuja, contained in a communiqué.
The centre said field reports from the border areas showed inadequate basic structures and the complete absence of trained health workers to manage the rapid influx of refugees.
It urged the government to constructively engage the Cameroonian Government through high level diplomacy to ease tensions in the Anglophone regions and facilitate the return of refugees and displaced persons.
It also called on relevant government agencies to ensure effective management of the refugee situation and emergency response in the affected areas.
“The Ministry of Interior should play a leading role as coordinating agency in managing the refugee situation.”
It advised security agencies to effectively monitor the crisis and strengthen security along the southern part of Nigeria-Cameroon border areas and intensify surveillance of cross-border movements.
It called on government to collaborate with the African Union, Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and the UN to support the resolution of the political crisis in Cameroon.
The centre further recommended that the government should sustain its mutual relations with Cameroon. (NAN)
