President of American University of Nigeria,AUN ,Yola ,Professor Margee Ensign has urged journalists and Nigerian leaders to pay more attention to the growing humanitarian crisis Internally Displaced Persons,IDPs are facing especially in the north east .
She made this appeal while addressing participants at the beginning of the 2nd Peace Journalism Workshop organized by the university.
Ensign outlined how her participation in the peace initiatives in Adamawa has exposed her to the humanitarian crisis facing internally displaced persons.Sadly she noted, the crisis has been grossly underreported.
In his written welcome address, Mr Dan Okereke ,ED communications and public relations noted that AUN is “an activist university”.He said further “our activism is in keeping faith with our madate as a development university.
According to Okereke “inviting you to participate in the 2nd Peace Journalism Workshop taking place today and tomorrow is a further demonstration of AUN’s strategic partnership of town and gown”
He also highlighted among others the fact that AUN has been “giving hope and mobilizing food aid to over 300,000 Internally Displaced Persons who escaped Boko Haram from Northern Adamawa,Yobe and Borno States to Yola where there is peace and security..”
