Former Consul-general of the Nigerian Mission to South Affrica and other Southern African countries, Ambassador Okey Emuchay, has lent his voice to the adoption of President Goodluck Jonathan, by the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, stating that the move is not only right and deserved, but also that it would greatly reduce rancor in the party.
According to him, such practice is in consonance with the best practice of democracy. “The democracy we have is the one we claimed we copied from America. In the US they have a culture. The sitting president who is desirous of a second term is given the first option of refusal,” stated Emuchay in an interview.
Emuchay is a governorship aspirant seeking to clinch the PDP party ticket for Abia state. According to him, Jonathan’s adoption is well deserved going by the presidents performance in office.
He insisted that what the party hierarchy did in adopting the president is proper and would stand the party in good stead ahead of 2015 election. “All parties are formed to win elections. And the relevant organs of PDP viewed it, deliberated and took decision. And then, they came out and decided to give endorsement to the sitting president.
“The forum of PDP governors, the BOT and then the NEC of the party which is a very important organ of the party, took a unanimous decision and therefore it has to be binding on the party. We should celebrate it because it reduces rancor. It is just another four years, from 2015 to 2019 and the president would return to Otuoke,” said the former diplomat.
He further added: “This will reduce the political temperature, it will reduce rancor, it reduces unnecessary infighting. Where we copied our constitution from, that is how they do things. Except a sitting president does not feel like going for a second term, he is given a first choice of refusal,” Emuche stated.
