Ahead of the forthcoming general elections, a Non-profit Organization, Friedrich Ebert Stifung (FES) Open Minds Young Voices (OMYV) has come up with an initiative to create awareness amongst youths on electioneering.
The initiative will be deliberated by stakeholders, Nigerian youth and politicians in an interactive programme in Abuja.
The conference with the theme “Beyond Election Promises – Role of the Youths,” is scheduled to hold on November 15 at Valencia Hotel, Blantrye Street, Off Ademola Adetokunbo Crescent, Wuse II by 9:45a.m.
In a statement obtained by Newsdiaryonline.com, the organisers said the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr. Bernhard Schlagheck will grace the occasion while PDP Chieftain, Ahmed Makarfi will be a discussant.
According to the statement signed by Ojooluwa Ibiloye, Communication officer, added that other participants would be given opportunity to engage in the round table discussion.
“As election period approaches, politicians are already wooing electorates with their campaign promises. Sadly, this routine political exercise goes on every four years without anyone tracking the campaign promises of politicians. Worst still, political parties are not doing enough to build ideological convictions that will guide each candidate to good governance and accountability,”
“To this end, members of FES Open Mind – Young Voices (OMYV) is organizing this event to commence the discussion on how Nigerian youths can play active role in the political system. The conversation will witness two (2) Panel Discussions. On the First Panel: Ulrich Thum (FES Nigeria Resident Representative), Chinedu Nwagu (Project Director, Trust Africa) Sentel F. Barnes (Chief of Party, International Republican Institute), and Cynthia Mbamalu (Project Manager, YIAGA Africa) will be discussing “Active Citizenship: Youths as Social Influencers.” The Second Panel will have: Serah Makka-Ugbabe (Country Director, ONE Campaign Nigeria), Hamza Lawal (CEO, Connected Development), Chioma Agwuegbo (Program Manager, Reboot), and Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi (PDP Chieftain). They will be discussing “Campaign Promises and Manifesto: How Can the Youth hold Leaders Accountable?”
“The event will afford participants the opportunity to engage salient issues around campaign promises, party manifesto, good governance and public accountability,” the statement read.
