Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho lauded Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo after the pair netted twice in Los Blancos’ 2-2 draw with Barcelona in a riveting Clasico encounter.

The Portuguese coach was positive about his side’s performance despite failing to close the gap on their fiercest rivals and admitted he enjoyed the match – especially the talismanic pair’s displays.

“Messi and Ronaldo are from another planet. I want my player to win [the Ballon d’Or], but they are both fantastic,” enthused Mourinho.

“As a coach, I’ve enjoyed the game. It was a great match and the result wasn’t decided until the final moment. Everyone has enjoyed the game too.”

Mourinho also reserved special words of praise for the performance of Mesut Ozil.

“Ozil provided us with quality and had a great match.”

The flamboyant coach refuses to discuss the referee’s performance in detail, but did state that the man in black made a vital mistake.

“Real Madrid are a club of gentlemen. You can’t speak about the referees. If there is a philosophy to follow then I have to adapt to it and in truth I like it.

“I’ll take a great match and a good referee, who at one moment in the match made a key mistake, like the players and I also do sometimes.”

The result sees Barcelona remain on top of the Liga table with a lead of three points, while maintaining their eight point gap over fifth place Madrid after seven games.
