UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed would on Saturday travel to Abuja to consult Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari and Rwandan President Paul Kagame on some issues bothering on the African continent.
Mr Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said on Friday in New York that Mohammed would have “informal discussions” with the two African leaders.
“The Deputy Secretary-General will depart New York for Abuja, Nigeria on Jan. 6 to have informal consultations on cross-regional issues with President Kagame, as incoming Chair of the AU, and with the President of Nigeria.
“She will also have meetings with the UN country team, and with senior government officials of Nigeria,” Haq said.
The UN Deputy Spokesman said the Deputy Secretary-General would return to New York on Jan. 14.
Mohammed has been leading the collegial efforts made by the entire UN system towards recalibrating the UN’s integrated strategy for the Sahel.
The efforts is aimed at further boosting the implementation of the strategy through a more integrated, cross-pillar approach, according to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
According to him, these efforts will contribute to mobilising
additional resources for the Sahel.
They will also ensure that adequate support is provided and that the aid of the international community is well coordinated, complementary and in support of the countries of the Sahel, he stressed. (NAN)
