In a recent breakthrough, the FCT Police Command has dismantled a notorious car theft syndicate specializing in receiving, rebranding, and selling stolen vehicles.
Acting on digital tracking data, police operatives recovered three stolen vehicles, including a Honda Accord, a Hyundai Accent, and a Peugeot 208.
The investigation began on October 10, 2024, when Mr. Philemon Olaoluwa reported his Honda Accord missing. Olaoluwa’s vehicle, which had broken down, was entrusted to a mechanic named Abdulhamid Saidu from Apo Mechanic Village in the FCT. However, instead of conducting repairs, Saidu vanished with the vehicle, which also contained its registration documents.
Using digital tracking technology, FCT Police traced the Honda Accord to Rayfield, Jos in Plateau State, where it was discovered in the possession of Steven Abang, a known accomplice in vehicle theft. At Abang’s workshop, two additional vehicles—believed to have been stolen—were in the process of being rebranded. Authorities revealed that Abang admitted to receiving the Honda from Saidu and confessed to selling over 16 stolen cars to various buyers over the past four years.
The FCT Police Command has urged residents to report suspicious activity to aid efforts against vehicle theft and similar crimes.
