For the first time in history, thousands of people converged on the newly constructed Kwankwasiyya Freedom Square within the multi-billion Naira Mahaha Sports Complex in Kano metropolis to mark the beginning of the New Year – 2015.
The occasion started few minutes to midnight showed the people down the count down to 12. 00a.m. on Thursday thereby ushering in the new year.
Organised by the Kano state government the occasion featured fireworks, music, and dancing had in attendance the state governor, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, his deputy, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and several public officials.
Speaking during the festivity, Governor Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso maintained that the out-going year has been very good for people of Kano in view of the innovative projects put in place by the government which have propelled the state to an enviable level of development.
“We are happy to have built modern infrastructure, delivered services, created jobs minimized poverty and ultimately improved the lives of the people of Kano state”, the governor enthused.
Although he noted that the 2014 was not without a bitter side, Governor Kwankwaso hoped that the New Year 2015 will usher in peace and prosperity in the state and the nation at large.
Governor Kwankwaso thanked people of the state for the cooperation and understanding they have being giving to his administration since coming on board in 2011, hoping same will be extended to his successor.
He appealed to the citizenry, especially the youth not to participate in any form of violence or any negative activities in the forthcoming general elections, stressing the need for the people to be law abiding at all times.
On the Kwankwasiyya Freedom Square, the governor explained that it would be utilized for different celebrations purposes, adding that the place will also accommodate different sporting activities as well as a sports academy for youth to enjoy.
He then drummed up support for APC gubernatorial candidate who is also the state deputy governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and his running mate Prof. Hafiz Abubakar whom he assured will continue the good work his government is doing. He urged the people of Kano to vote for them in order to ensure continuity.
