Two unemployed men – Nasiru Idris, 20; and Ahmed Mubarak, 26;  – on Wednesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, over unlawful possession of dangerous weapon and stealing.

Both defendants, who reside at Isale-Oja, Agege, Lagos, were arraigned before Magistrate Mrs A.S. Odusanya on a three-count charge of conspiracy, unlawful possession of dangerous weapon and stealing.

They, however, denied committing the offences and were admitted to a bail of N100, 000 each, with two sureties each in like sum.

Odusanya said the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The prosecution counsel, Insp Emmanuel Ajayi, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on Jan. 17 at 4.00 a.m. on Guinness Road, Agege, Lagos.

He said that the defendants, who were unlawfully in possession of a double-edged dagger, stole four cell phones valued at N200,000.

“When the police intercepted the defendants, a dagger and four phones were found.

“When questioned, they cannot give any explanation on the dagger and phones in their possession,” he said.

Ajayi noted that the owners of the four phones were yet to be ascertained.

According to the prosecutor, the offences violate Sections 287, 312 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates three years’ imprisonment for stealing, while Section 312 also prescribes three years for unlawful possession of dangerous weapon.

Odusanya adjourned the case until Feb. 25 for mention. (NAN)
