The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Bauchi State chapter, has sensitised 100 visually students of the Bauchi Special Education Centre, to stem the scourge of Gender Based Violence (GBV).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the exercise was organised by the organisation in partnership with Plan International, an NGO, as part of activities to mark the 16 days of Activism to eliminate GBV.

Mrs Bulak Afsa, NAWOJ’s Chairperson, said the union extended its outreach to the Centre, to educate the hearing and visually impaired students towards an all-inclusive campaign.

“Students with special needs are the most vulnerable in the society.

“NAWOJ is creating awareness to ensure they are also part of the elimination campaign,” she said, and urged the students to break the culture of silence to expose perpetrators.

Afsa said that GBV was not limited to females only but the males also experience one form of violence or the other.

She expressed the readiness of the union to partner with relevant organisations to ensure that perpetrators were brought to book in the state.

In his remarks, Mr Abdullah Imam, representative of the Plan International, stressed the need for collective efforts to end the menace.

Also speaking, Mr Usman Ibrahim Principal of the Centre, commended the organisers for selecoting the school for the programme.

Ibrahim said the school would ensure that the information on GBV were circulated among the students.(NAN)
