oloye Jumoke Akinjide-FCT minister of stateIn its continuous efforts to empower rural women in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, Minister of State for FCT, Oloye Jumoke Akinjide has commissioned the multi-million naira Kuje Women Development Centre built by the FCT Administration.
Akinjide said the Women Development Centre was conceived to address the pertinent issues of poverty and boost enterpreneurial skills among women in the rural communities in the FCT even as she noted that they are.
According to the minister “Women constitute a larger percentage of Nigeria’s population, even though some of our women suffer from deprivations. It is a fact that in societies like ours, our rural women have less access than men to education and economic opportunities.
“This has greatly undermined their abilities to meet the basic needs of livelihood. It is against this backdrop that the present administration made empowerment of rural women an important focal point in its policy agenda for the FCT” she stated.
The Minister further explained that the need to empower women and youth informed the implementation of initiatives such as the establishment of microfinance bank to provide micro-credit facilities and revival of women development centers.
She noted that the center will besides offering vocational skills to the women also inculcate the values of hardwork, dedication, ethical rectitude, justice and moral discipline among others into the women.
Akinjide also assured the women of Rubochi that the administration will replicate the project in their community to expand their capacities in various vocation forth economic wellbeing of the people and their community.
Mandate secretary of the Social Development Secretariat, Blessing Onuh noted that the project is part of the administrations move to break the cycle of poverty among women in the territory.
She called on the women montage full advantage of the facility as it would be only guarantee for a visible impact in the socio-economic circumstance of their families.
Speaking at the event, leader of Market Women Association in the FCT, Mrs. Felicia Sani commended the FCT administration and the Social Development Secretariat for paying attention to the development and well being of the FCT women.
She noted that with the construction of the center, the FCT administration is developing the capacity of FCT women which according to her would in turn better their living and reduce poverty in the nation’s capital.
Mrs. Sani remarked that any nation that ignores the development of its women folks would not develop.
The center will offer vocational skills such as computer education, tailoring, hair dressing, catering services, beads and jewelry making.
