Deputy Chairman-Human Rights Committee and Member Representing Ife Federal Constituency in Nigeria’s House of Representatives,Hon Rotimi Makinde has joined the call for the immediate redeployment of Police Commissioner in Rivers State, Mr Joseph Mbu .The lawmaker said in a statement on Saturday that, “Mbu had not acted professionally since this altercation between him and the Governor started, I therefore appeal to the Police Inspector-General, Alhaji Abubakar Mohammed to sanction and redeploy Mbu from Rivers State with immediate effect. Actions like this as displayed by Mbu will only make Nigeria a laughing stock in the comity of nations. In other decent democracies, civil and highly disciplined officers are recruited into their Police system.
The federal lawmaker said “I have been following with keen interest the actions and utterances of the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Mr. Joseph Mbu for some time now, and it has shown clearly that the man has simply desecrated and abused his constitutional duties just because he chooses to be subservient to federal powers at the expense of Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi and the people of the State,” Makinde said.
“This is a democratic dispensation; the three arms of government are expected to work as a team for the overall interest of the people within the ambit of rule of law and decency. In my view, Mbu had not acted professionally since this altercation between him and the Governor started, I therefore appeal to the Police Inspector-General, Alhaji Abubakar Mohammed to sanction and redeploy Mbu from Rivers State with immediate effect. Actions like this as displayed by Mbu will only make Nigeria a laughing stock in the comity of nations. In other decent democracies, civil and highly disciplined officers are recruited into their Police system.
According to Makinde “Clearly, the malice and hate orchestrated by Rivers CP against the State Government have contributed largely to break down of law and order in the State. It is sad to hear an Executive Governor crying out and say “shoot me, if you can” this is most embarrassing to the nation. The IGP should not allow Joseph Mbu to malign his image. However, Mbu should be conscious of the fact that Amaechi was elected and not appointed, so he will surely leave for him. The Police authority should also note that keeping Mbu a day longer in Rivers State appears to be a deliberate attempt to hack a dirty job, that is why I and other well meaning Nigerians are calling for his immediate redeployment before the matter degenerates further. Enough of this treacherous and cheap politics.
