#TrackNigeria -The Director General of NAFDAC,  Prof. Mojisola C. Adeyeye, has highlighted the need to be careful over the quality of inputs used on farm animals. According  to the NAFDAC boss,  caution must be remain the watchword since farm inputs eventually enter the food chain for public consumption.
Speaking at a workshop on risk assessment in feed production in Lagos, Thursday,   Adeleye said,  “It is a well-known fact that whatever is fed to the farm animals will eventually enter the food chain and farmers are usually the first partaker of their produce.
She added,  “It is therefore important for the farmers to be more cautious on the quality of inputs used on their farm animals and ensure a safe, sound, wholesome product fit for human consumption, are churned out for human consumption.

Adeyeye expressed her belief  that the workshop will go a long way in educating stakeholders from both practice and product regulatory perspectives in achieving feed safety in Nigeria.
“The objective of this workshop is strictly achieving a safer food of animal origin for our citizen amidst other benefits such as domestic and international trade, safer environment and a sound wellbeing of our livestock.
“To us in NAFDAC, we are committed and willing to collaborate with all and sundry on all activities that will ensure food safety in the country. The emerging trend of events in global food safety have revealed that the safety and wellbeing of man directly depends on the animal health and environment.
“In order to effectively achieve this height, a multi-disciplinary approach is the only left alternative, which must be effectively explored as soon as possible. We are yet to explore the livestock sector of international trade,”the NAFDAC boss said.

It was this case for multi-agency synergy that was also canvassed  by Dr. Bukar Ali Usman,  mni who is the Director, Veterinary Medicine and Allied Products, VMAP at NAFDAC.
While addressing participants at the workshop held in Oshodi, Lagos, Dr Usman said,  “If we continue to build upon the synergy that exists between the Agency, NIAS and other relevant stakeholders such as PAN, ASAN, NVMA, FISON etc, the established strong relationship and mutual support that arise from such will add impetus to the regulatory framework in Nigeria, therefore resulting to the production of animal feeds that are of international standard.
He implored all participants to ensure  “that together we can provide a safe and wholesome food supply chain capable of meeting the nutritional needs and healthy living of Nigerians and enable stakeholders to (access)  international trade at ease.”
