Chief Godwin Dabo ,the highly controversial politician from Benue state is dead.Reports this afternoon on social media said he died in Garki Hospital Abuja today. But Newsdiaryonline could not immediately confirm the cause of what appears like his sudden death.
Dabo’s death came as a shock to many who have been following his political profile. In particular, insiders said he died with an unfulfilled dream as he was still working on a project aimed at selling President Goodluck Jonathan’s 2015 re-election plot to Nigerians:Dabo according to insiders was the head of a secret committee said to have been raised to mobilize support for Jonathan’s 2015 tenure elongation or second term project.
It was not certain as at the time of writing this report if Jonathan actually recruited him or if some overzealous Aso Rock hawks engaged Dabo for the Jonathan 2015 Project.Reuben Abati the presidential spokesman has said that Jonathan will not benefit from the proposed 6-year single term presidency which many Nigerians are suspicious about.
Sources told Newsdiaryonline that a prominent member of the pro-Jonathan secret campaign committee had contacted a former head of state for his blessings for the- Jonathan- 2015 project; but the ex – head of state known for his craftiness urged the campaigner to give him some time.Such response is known to be his way of dismissing or rejecting any proposal he finds unwelcome, the source said.
Equally, this afternoon, a villa insider recalled the fact that Dabo had been there to do some “arcane or even dirty jobs for virtually all Nigerian heads of state or presidents he came across”.One particular story the source recalled today was how some courageous people met General Sani Abacha while he was still head of state in Aso Rock Villa and complained about the move to make Dabo a major campaigner for Abacha’s self transmutation project. The ex dictator wanted to transmute from military to civilian president. The men said Dabo was not credible and the head of state should involve more credible people in the campaign.
Those who met the dictator got a rude shock from the villa.Abacha told them that there was no need to involve credible people who would care about their reputation.Bringing in credible people might undermine the project because if they came under attack, they may be tempted to withdraw or be on the defensive in order to protect their names.Abacha said Dabo was the best person since he was widely seen as a man without credibility, any further attacks on Dabo would not deter him and he (Abacha)was certain Dabo would charge ahead with the campaign against all odds.
So those who thought Abacha had no ‘intelligence’ might be wrong afterall. He knew what he wanted and he equally knew how to get it.Abacha died all of a sudden in the Villa.
