Niger State Government says it would soon recruit 150 nurses and midwives to fill existing shortage of manpower in the health sector.
Dr Mustapha Jibril, the state Commissioner for Health, disclosed this in an interview in Minna on Monday.
He said that already, government had recruited about 400 health workers at secondary level as well as over 100 nurses and midwives at the Primary Health Care level.
“Over sixteen years, there has not been any mass recruitment of health workers to fill this gap.
“It is only in this administration that we have witnessed massive recruitment like this in the health sector,” he said.
According to him, the recruitment would be structured where an employee would sign an undertaking to work in rural areas.
“The moment the person request for a transfer, he or she will have their appointment terminated and will be replaced with somebody else.
“We have done that in the past during our monitoring and evaluation exercise,” Jibril said.
The commissioner explained that the effort was to ensure that health facilities were functional 24 hours, adding that strict measures would be applied on defaulters.
He stressed that the administration of Gov. Abubakar Bello was committed to providing qualitative healthcare services to the people of the state. (NAN)
