1.4m condoms distributed in Niger in 9 months

The Niger state Family Planning Coordinator, Mrs. Dorcas Talatu Abu has disclosed that over 1.4 condoms have been distributed in the state from January to September 2018.
She disclosed this on Tuesday at a stakeholders meeting on Child Spacing organized by Pathfinder International Nigeria in Minna.
According to her, compared to other methods of contraceptives, condoms has become the more acceptable contraceptive in Niger state adding that the health prevalence rate has risen from 6.6 per cent to 8.1 per cent.
“In 2017, the agency distributed 800,000 pieces of condoms but as at September ending, over 1.4 million condoms had been distributed, we have run out of stock and there are demand for more. However, we are expecting more stock in November.”
“The condoms that have been shared include both male and female condoms. They are in high demand.
“The intrauterine device which should take the lead is not being patronized most. However, over 30,131 women in the state have received these implants in the state, although oral pills are also in the increase, condoms have taken the lead. “
The Family Planning Coordinator however lamented that there is still high unmet need for family planning information and services in the state.
Also speaking,  the Technical Advisor, Family Planning/Reproductive Health, Pathfinder International Nigeria, Dr. Sakinat Bellingham said the stakeholders meeting is to advocate for adequate Child spacing in the state and to correct some misinformation, myths and misconceptions about child birth spacing in the state.
