The Senate on Wednesday held a valedictory session in honour of late Senator Uche Chukwumerijie representing Abia North and Senator Ahmad Zannah representing Borno Central .
Leading the debate Senate leader Victor Ndoma-Egba noted with heavy heart and deep sense of sorrow the demise of the two serving legislators.
The Senate leader said with the immense contributions of late Senator Uche Chukwumerijie to debates at plenary and his robust representation to his constituency, his death was a monumental loss to his family, constituency, Abia State, the Senate and the country as a whole.
Ndoma-Egba said late Senator Ahmad Zannah was an amiable, articulate, resourceful politician and a nationalist by his outlook to national issues. “He was particularly passionate about the implementation of Lake Chad replenishment project to safe guard the livelihood of about 25 million farmers and fishermen in the communities bordering the lake area” Ndoma-Egba said.
He prayed that the Senate should observe a minute’s silence in honour of late Senator Uche Chukwumerijie and Senator Ahmad Zannah. The Senate leader also urged the Senate to send a delegation to condole with their families as well as the people and government of Abia and Borno States.
In his contribution, the Deputy Senate President Senator Ike Ekweremadu said the two late legislators shared many things in common. According to Ekweremadu Senator Uche Chukwumerijie would be remembered for his position during the Biafa civil war and Senator Ahmad Zannah would be remembered for his stand against insurgency in the North East.
Senator Ganiyu said the Senate was celebrating the late legislators because they were great achievers. Senator Ali Ndume urged the children of the late legislators not to allow the legacy of their father go away.
Senate President Senator David Mark in his contribution said it was difficult for all Senators to express their filling over the death of their colleagues. He said the late legislators were refined parliamentarians.
