A 49-year-old sales representative, Adetutu Fowowe, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing his employer’s N1.6 million.
Fowowe, whose residential address was not given, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge of stealing.
The prosecution counsel, Insp Lucky Ihiehie, told the court that the defendant committed the offence from April 15, 2019 to Oct. 15, 2019 at Alakuko, Lagos State.
He said that the defendant stole the sum of N1.6 million belonging to his employer, Mr Sunday Adeniyi.
He alleged that the defendant diverted the complainant’s money entrusted in his care to his personal use.
The prosecutor said the defendant was handed over to the police when the theft was detected.
He noted that the offence violates Section 287(7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section carries seven years’ imprisonment for stealing.
Magistrate A.O. Layinka granted the defendant N500, 000 bail with two sureties as part of the bail conditions.
Layinka said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The case was adjourned until March 22 for further hearing. (NAN)
