The Police Service Commission (PSC) has officially inaugurated its Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) during a ceremony held in Abuja on Wednesday.
The event was facilitated by representatives from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), led by Olusegun Adigun, who spoke on behalf of ICPC Chairman Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN.
In his address, PSC Chairman DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd) emphasized the importance of impartiality, urging team members to avoid tribal and religious biases in their duties. “You are now in the temple of justice,” he stated, highlighting that Nigeria’s interests must come first.
He encouraged team members to hold him accountable for any corrupt practices, reinforcing a culture of transparency within the Commission.
The ICPC’s Adigun elaborated on the ACTU’s role as an internal check mechanism to combat corruption within ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs).
He stated that the initiative, approved by the Federal Government, aims to strengthen institutions and promote good governance.
Adigun expressed hope that the ACTU would significantly contribute to the PSC’s vision of a disciplined and accountable police service.
DIG Taiwo Lakanu, a commissioner at the PSC, pledged the Commission’s support to ensure the unit’s success in its mandate.
In his acceptance speech, newly appointed ACTU Chairman Nasidi Yusuf committed to upholding integrity and fostering a culture of zero tolerance for corruption.
He outlined plans to promote anti-corruption education, address related issues promptly, and work closely with the ICPC and other stakeholders to develop effective strategies.
As the PSC takes this significant step towards enhancing transparency and accountability, the new team aims to address corruption risks and monitor progress in their initiatives.
