The recent sour relationship between Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa state and the state legislators on Monday took another dimension with the lawmakers issuing an ultimatum over alleged shortfall in payment of salaries.
The ultimatum is coming on the heels of allegations that there was a plot to impeach the governor, by the members of the state House of Assembly, which they denied vehemently.
During plenary session on Monday, the lawmakers unanimously frowned at the nonpayment of salaries of August and September of 2012 during industrial action embarked by the state civil servants as they also accused the state government of unilateral deduction of salaries of workers in the last month payment.
While moving the motion at the floor, under matters of public importance led ,member representing Hong constituency, Hon.Wafarniyi Theman observed with dismay that the iniquities’ alleged to have been perpetrated by Adamawa state government, ‘’ was getting out of hand. It’s time for we the legislatures to use our constitutional powers to rescue Adamawa people.’’
Theman added that they will never fold their arms to watch the government being run like a personal empire of the governor, demanding that the House should compel the governor to pay the two months salaries owed to the civil servants as well as paying them moneys unilaterally deducted from their salaries.
Also contributing members representing Numan ,Michika , Gombi and Guyuk constituencies, Hon.Kwaomoti La’ori,Mr Adamu Kamale,Jerry Kundisi as well as Mrs Wilbina Jackson respectively said that the issue of ‘’ No Work No Pay’’ implemented during the strike should not arise.
‘’ The government is heartless, the government should be ordered to pay back the two months salaries, otherwise we will take the government to peoples’ court,’’ said the legislatures.
After others contribution the lawmakers led by the speaker Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri had directed that the state Commissioner of Finance as well as the Account General should appear before the House on Tuesday.
The lawmakers had issued two weeks’ ultimatum to payback the two months unpaid salaries and also to refund what was described as ‘the cut-at-will’ on or before this Friday.
The state government was equally asked to settle local government workers and also to pay teachers their outstanding salaries.
