Nigeria Labour Congress NLC has announced the appointment of a new General Secretary.He is Dr Peter Ozo-Eson.Until his appointment Ozo-Eson was Chief Economist and Head of Research Department of the Congress”
His appointment was announced in a communiqué at the end of NLC’s National Executive Council ,NEC meeting on Friday in Enugu. It “announced the appointment of a substantive General Secretary in the person of Dr Peter Ozo-Eson, who until his appointment was the Chief Economist and Head of Research Department of the Congress”
NLC also slammed little dividends of Democracy15 years after. “The NEC-in-session observed that although the nation has had 15 years of unbroken democracy, there is little to show as dividends of democracy. NEC noted serial acts of impunity, abuse of human rights, harassment of the media, the disruption of peaceful protests, diminishing jobs etc, and urged the government to make democracy more benevolent and beneficial;
“The NEC-in-session commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its improved performance in the conduct of elections, but cautioned against the over-militarization of election zones as it could be counter-productive, and accordingly urged the government to take note.
“The NEC-in-session called on the government to ensure that the 2015 general elections are free, fair, credible and acceptable
The communiqué also said “The NEC-in-session noted the out-break of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the country and the panic and havoc it continues to wreak. It commended the federal government for the proactive measures it has taken and urged it do all that is necessary to secure the entire populace while creating the utmost work-place safety for the exposed Health Care personnel battling to control its spread.
“The NEC-in-session resolved to get all employers of Labour to maintain a group life assurance policy for their employees with a minimum benefit of three times total emolument in line with the provisions of the Pension Reform Act 2014, Section 4 (5);
“The NEC-in-Session noted with concern the delay by government in implementing the 33.3 per cent increase in pension payment approved by stakeholders and vowed to secure its implementation;
The NEC-in-session frowned at attempts by some officials of the Ministry of Labour to fragment industrial unions by way of creating false and illegal dichotomies and accordingly advised the government not to court controversy;
Comrade Chris Uyot Acting General Secretary and Comrade Abdulwahed I. Omar President who signed the communiqué said “The NEC-in-session noted with concern the deteriorating security situation in the country, especially in the North East where insurgents continue to pillage the land and in the South-South where unabated crude oil theft has all but left the economy prostrate. It accordingly urged the government not to relent in its effort at securing the nation;
“The NEC-in-session informed that the next Delegates Conference of the Nigeria Labour Conference would take place in Abuja from February 9-12, 2015;
“ NEC-in-session noted the up-coming general elections in 2015 and also took congnisance that some of our colleagues are preparing to go into party politics to actualize their political ambitions.
The NEC-in-session expressed its general support and encouragement to our Comrades with such intentions.
NLC also “resolved to take control, revitalize and strengthen the Labour Party in line with the ideals of Labour and its ideological preference.
