Some Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have commended the Supreme Court judgment that declared full autonomy to local government councils in the country.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the apex court in a suit filed by the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) on Thursday delivered judgment, giving full autonomy to the third tier of government.
The judgment declared as unconstitutional for state governors to hold funds allocated for local government administration.
Reacting to the judgment on Friday in Lokoja, the Chief Executive of Connected Development (CODE), Amb. Hamzat Lawal, told NAN that the judgment is a significant step toward strengthening democratic governance at the third tier government in Nigeria.
Lawal, who doubles as the Founder of Follow TheMoney, said the ruling is pivotal to local governments’ financial independence.
He added that “local governments will be better equipped to address the needs of their communities, improve service delivery, and promote grassroots development.
“The court’s declaration that state governments have no authority to elect caretaker committees also underscores the importance of democratic processes.
“A local government council is only recognizable with a democratically elected government, ensuring that the voices of the people are heard and respected.”
Lawal noted that his organisation had consistently advocated transparency, accountability and efficient use of public funds.
He stressed that the Supreme Court ruling would prevent diversion of local government funds and promote responsible governance.
He, therefore urged the federal and state governments to comply with the ruling, and ensure that local governments received their allocated funds directly.
He emphasised that “it is crucial for the development of our communities and the realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Nigeria.
“As we celebrate this victory for democracy and local governance, Follow TheMoney remains committed to monitoring fund allocations to ensure that they serve the best interests of the people.
“We call on citizens, CSOs and stakeholders to join us in this effort to hold our leaders accountable and foster a culture of transparency and good governance.”
On his part, Amb. Idris Muraina, the Chairman, Kogi NGO Networks (KONGONETS), described the apex court judgment as “indeed a win for democracy and federalism.
“We celebrate this outcome. However, we look forward to certify true copy of the judgment.
“We all have a lot to learn from the judgment, knowing fully when that Section 162 talks about joint allocation account.
“In summary, this is a good one for the masses, and will usher in development from the grassroots ‘bottom -top’ approach to development.”
On the Appeal Court judgment on Thursday affirming Gov. Ahmed Ododo as duly elected governor of Kogi, Muraina said the victory is a well deserved one.
He encouraged the governor to rededicate himself to the duty of pursuing all round development for the state. (NAN)
