(Press Release)Considering the importance of the theme of the 42nd Annual Accountants conference of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), a good number of Executive Governors of the States of the Federation are set to grace the confab as resource persons and as guests of the Institute’s 48th President, Mr. Adedoyin Idowu Owolabi, BSc, MILR, FCA. The conference which is scheduled to take place at the International Conference Center, ICC, and Sheraton Hotels & Towers, Abuja, from Monday, October 15 to Friday, October 19, 2012, has as its theme, “Building Enduring Institutions for National Development” It will be declared open by President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday, October 16 at.ICC.
Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), the Executive Governor of Lagos State and Alh. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, the Executive Governor of Niger State, will be making presentations on the topic, “Governance And Sustainable Development: Addressing The Leadership Challenges” during the plenary session of the conference. Also at one of the workshop sessions, Alhaji Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, the Executive Governor of Gombe State will be discussing “Financial Reporting And Value Creation In The Public Sector: Issues, Challenges And Prospects”.
Not only that, the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria will discuss another paper by Mr. Vernon Soare of The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), entitled, Building Trust In Financial Report: Meeting Stakeholders’ Expectations; while his Deputy Governor (FSS), Dr. Kingsley Moghalu, will discuss a workshop topic entitled Whistle Blowing: Setting A Framework For Corporate And Public Accountability
Apart from that other Governors and members of the National Assembly will be coming as special guests to make sundry useful contributions to building enduring institutions for the nation’s development as well as identify with the Institute and the President and to grace the gala night rounding off the conference. Prominent among them is Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, who recently emerged Leadership Governor of the year.
According to the 48th ICAN President, Mr. Doyin Owolabi, , who will deliver the keynote address of the conference, “Our plan is to assist in building enduring institutions for our national development and we have amassed a team of world-class resource persons. I’m also confident that the recommendations of the conference will come in handy for the Government especially at a time like this when workable solutions are being sought for the myriads of problems threatening the stability of our polity.”
Chairman of the Conference Committee and member of the ICAN Governing Council, Mr Tayo Phillips, also expressed the readiness of his committee to make this year’s edition of the conference unforgettable. Said he: “We are set for the conference and for years to come, this particular edition of the conference will continue to be a reference point in terms of colour and pomp, discourse and attendance. Already we have top class experts like the lead paper presenter, Professor Pat Utomi;Vice President for Africa, World Bank, Mrs. Obiageli Ezekwesili; the legal luminary, Femi Falana (SAN), and an array of revered ICAN Past Presidents and others who have agreed to be resource persons.”
Other papers to be presented at the Conference include “Building enduring Institutions for National Development”, “Governance and Sustainable Development: Addressing the Leadership Challenges” and the lead paper, “Building Trust in Financial Report: Meeting Stakeholders Expectations”.
Four Past Presidents of the Institute in persons of Mr Ayo Oni, Chief (Mrs) Olutoyin Olakunrin, Chief Arthur Mbanefo and Mr Emmanuel Ijewere have also accepted to be chairmen at the various sessions at the Conference.
Aside paper presentations, workshops, plenary sessions, there will also be a Conference Gala night which will be graced by the crème de la crème of the Nigerian society.
