The Catholic Bishop of Jalingo Diocese, Most Rev. Charles Hammawa, on Wednesday donated relief materials to Internally Displaced Persons’ (IDPs’) camps in Kona, Mayo-Dassa, Nukkai, and ATC in Jalingo.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the bishop in company with other priests distributed food items and toiletries to the IDPs, who are victims of the recent herders/farmers crisis in the communities.
Hammawa told the IDPs not to lose hope in the country and in God, saying that the diocese shared in their plight.
“It’s unfortunate, but we can only say what we feel and encourage the government to rise up to the occasion.” he said.
Hammawa, who noted that Nigerians were living more and more in a dehumanising situation called on all citizens to continue to pray for peace in the land.
While calling on those engaged in the killing of innocent Nigerians in whatever guise to have a rethink, Hammawa called on security agencies to work harder in securing the lives and property of Nigerians.
“These serial killings have been with us for some time now and it’s high time government came out with a strategy to stop the atrocities.
“We have people, who are trained for this.
“Government has the resources and it should do something differently,” he said.
Mr Bala Simon, one of the IDPs, expressed appreciation to the bishop and the Catholic Church for identifying with them in their most difficult moment.
Simon appealed to the government and its security agencies to end the crisis to enable them to leave the camps and return to their ancestral homes. (NAN)
