African Youth Commission elects new officials

The African Youth Commission (AYC) has elected its new executives who would steer the affairs of the commission for two years.

The election was held during the 2019 Pan Africa Youth Conference held in Banjul, The Gambia.

The new executive include: Natalie Sonia Makundane (Ugandan), Chairperson; Flomo Maiwo (Liberian), Deputy Chairperson and Moussa Fara Diop (Senegalese) Commissioner for Political Affairs.

Others are Jennifer Abaji (Nigerian) Commissioner for Gender; Dennis Keis (Kenyan) Commissioner for Peace and Security while Patrick Michaelson Gibrilla (Sierra Leonian) Commissioner of Trade and Industry.

The election was conducted by the AYC electoral body chaired by Arlette Alexis.

He said that 23 applications were received from the AYC member states.

In her acceptance speech, Makundane appreciated the members of AYC for electing her to lead them for the next two years.

She pledged to strengthen the commission and to ensure that the rights of the African youths are defended during her tenure. 

“We also want to establish a national consortium in every country in Africa because we need to have the voice of every youth.

 “Our top priorities are employment and entrepreneurship, health, good governance and human rights as well as peace and security. Anything to do with the development of the youths will be the forefront of the commission.

“Our members have great expectations from us and we will work to ensure that we do not disappoint you,” she said.
