The Plateau State Government says it will distribute 600,000 sanitary pads to schools in the 17 local governments of the state.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Caroline Dafur, who disclosed this on Friday in Jos, said that the distribution was to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child.
Dafur said that the state government through the ministry would establish sanitary pad bank in 20 schools in the state.
“ The state government is responsive and sensitive to the needs of the girl child and all children in the state,” she said.
The commissioner said that sometimes young girls got scared and frustrated and stay away from school during their menstrual period .
“No girl should avoid school during their monthly flow and that is why we want the sanitary pad bank in schools,” she said.
Also speaking, Mrs Olivia Dazyem, the chairperson, Plateau State Gender and Equal Opportunity Commission, said that girls must be protected at all time.
Dazyem said that the issue of the girl child in the state had received a lot of attention and commended the state government. (NAN)
