Sokoto state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is working on the production of consensus candidates for the forthcoming State, governorship and National Assembly elections.
Disclosing this in Sokoto during a on Thursday, Gov. Aliyu Wamakko at a gathering of the party members.Wamakko said that a seven-man committee has been set up for each of the three senatorial zones in the state.
The governor also said that the three committees will continue to work to avoid the conduct of primary elections.
” We have already reached between 70 to 80 per cent consensus for the state and national assemblies aspirants, while the efforts will be sustained.
” We also have five gubernatorial aspirants and we are striving relentlessly to come up with a consensus candidate to avoid a primary election, unless it becomes necessary.
” The aspirants should set aside their selfish interests and work towards ensuring the growth and progress of the party,” the governor, urged.
Wamakko also promised that the party in the state will give all its bonafide members to legally aspire for any elective posts and at all levels.
The governor commended the members of the party and the aspirants for their steadfastness and being law abiding.
Wamakko also condemned the recent action of the police and other security agencies at the National assembly, describing it as a rape on democracy.
The acting chairman of the APC in the state, Alhaji Usman Danmadamin-Isa said that the meeting was part of efforts to ensure hitch-free primaries and general polls.
NAN reports that the meeting was attended by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, his Sokoto state assembly counterpart, Alhaji Lawalli Zayyana, other state and national assemblies members and the APC National Vice Chairman, Alhaji Inuwa Abdulkadir, among others.
Many believe that the consensus drive may boost Tambuwal’s chances of clinching the APC guber ticket in the state.
