Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan has asserted that Boko Haram is now an Al Qaeda operation.Jonathan who spoke in Paris on Saturday after a meeting with West African leaders.He was quoted by Reuters as having said at a news Conference that “Boko Haram is no longer a local terrorist group, it is operating clearly as an al Qaeda operation, it is an al Qaeda of West Africa.”
He added that, “We have shown our commitment for a regional approach. Without West African countries coming together we will not be able to crush these terrorists” .
The global news agency also said West African leaders have vowed to wage a ‘total war’ against Boko Haram. “There is determination to tackle this situation head on … to launch a war, a total war on Boko Haram,” President of Chad Idriss Deby reportedly said.
French President Francois Hollande described the global danger Boko Haram represents. “The threat is serious and dangerous for the region, Africa and Europe,” he said.
Before the Paris meeting commenced, the British Foreign Minister William Hague took a swipe at Nigeria’s strategy against the sect.
“Nigerian security forces have not been well structured for this kind of thing and that has been shown by the problem getting worse,” Hague said.
He however added that ,”We can help with that which is why we are offering to embed military advisers within the Nigerian headquarters.”
Global attention has been focused on Boko Haram since the kidnap of over 200 girls from a school in Chibok,Borno State,Nigeria.
