A 23-year-old barrow pusher, Muktar Aliyu, who allegedly stole three bags of rice valued at N81,000, was on Thursday arraigned in a Kaduna Chief Magistrates Court.
Aliyu, whose address is unknown, is facing a count charge of stealing.
The prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, told the court that Habiba Wasiu, of Malali in Kaduna, reported the matter at the Gabasawa Police Station on Jan. 21.
Leo said the defendant was given three bags of rice valued at N81,000 belonging to the complainant to take to her car outside Central Market, Ahmadu Bello Way Kaduna.
Leo alleged that while going to the complainant’s car, she stopped on the road to greet a friend and the defendant ran away with the bags of rice.
The prosecutor said the complainant then raised an alarm and some youths chased after the defendant where he was caught trying to hide the bags of rice.
Leo noted that the defendant committed an offence contrary to Section 271 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Chief Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N150, 000 with one surety in like sum.
Emmanuel adjourned the case until Feb. 28, for mention. (NAN)
