The Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State has said that in the event of Governor Amaechi leaving its fold for another party, the party was certain that it would still win gallantly all stages of future elections in his (Amaechi’s) ward.
The PDP statement, which the party said was a reaction to a closed door meeting the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi held with some leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), noted that such action was not unexpected and therefore not a shocker to the Party, adding that Governor Amaechi has consistently conducted himself in a rebellious manner and disloyal to the PDP leadership in the state and at the national level.
“In the light of the above, we are aware the Governor has directed his loyal chairmen of local government councils and their councilors to commence registration of members for the All Progressives Congress in the various wards in the 23 LGAs of the state’’, the statement explains.
The statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media to the State PDP Chairman, Jerry Needam said said the party was “also not unaware of the sustained funding and parley between the Rivers State Governor and chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on the understanding that he (Amaechi) ‘if suffocated’ in PDP will destroy the party and formally assume his membership in the APC.”
The Party said while it welcomed the Governor’s move to dump the PDP for another party, it was very optimistic that such move was inconsequential to its success in all levels of elections contests in not only the 4 Ikwerre ethnic group LGAs but in the home ward of Governor Amaechi.
The PDP further claimed that Governor Amaechi lost in his ward in 2011 Governorship election but for the efforts and intervention of the current Supervising Minister for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, who was the Director General of his (Amaechi’s) governorship campaign and that of the President in the state.
“Unarguably, the Minister, then Director General of his (Amaechi’s) Governorship Campaign in the State, delivered him (Amaechi) from losing election in his ward in Ubima. His exit from the PDP is therefore an automatic failure for him and all his co-travelers, and we would be happy to celebrate that move”, PDP stressed.
