The Adamawa Government on Monday in Yola began the distribution of cheques of various amounts to victims of 2011 post-election violence in the state. The Federal Government had released over N420 million for disbursement to victims of the 2011 post election violence in Adamawa State.
Speaking at the ceremony, the acting Chairman of the Post-Election Violence Committee, in the state Alhaji Mohammad Ajuji Jimeta , urged the victims to appreciate what they got from government as the gesture was to assist them but not as compensation.
Ajuji said the state government received N420 million from the Federal Government for the victims.
Ajuji, who did not give the number of victims to benefit from the exercise said it would be done on local government basis beginning with Yola North, with 52 victims. He further explained that the amount would be shared among the victims based on the quantum of their losses during the crisis.
According to him, the committee would commence the disbursement of the funds to the victims at other local government areas after necessary screening and verification.
He called on the affected persons to give the committee the necessary support and cooperation to ensure the success of the exercise.
Speaking to reporters,some of the victims expressed gratitude to the government for the support. Malam Tijjani Aliyu and Mr Emeka Agbor,chairman of the affected persons urged Nigerians to shun politics of violence. Agbor also tasked members of the committee to ensure justice and fairness in the discharge of their responsibility.
He also urged them to work out effective modalities for equitable distribution of the funds as directed by the Federal Government.
