Nigeria’s President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has said he received with sadness news of the sudden death of President Bingu Wa Mutharika of Malawi.He also called for an orderly transfer of power in the aftermath of the tragedy.
A statement by presidential spokesman Reuben Abati today said on behalf of himself, the government and people of Nigeria, President Jonathan extends sincere condolences to late President Bingu Wa Mutharika’s family as well as the government and people of Malawi.
Jonathan also assured the people of Malawi of the sympathy and solidarity of the people of Nigeria and Africa as they mourn late President Bingu Wa Mutharika who was also Chairperson of the African Union from January, 2010 to January, 2011.
The Malawian president was pronounced clinically dead yesterday.Nigeria’s president in his message as well urged “ the political leadership of Malawi and its security agencies to ensure an orderly transfer of presidential powers in keeping with Malawi’s existing constitutional order ahead of the country’s next presidential elections scheduled to hold in 2014.”In deed, the Malawian situation reminds Nigerians of the Umaru YarAdua saga during which the country was thrown into confusion in the aftermath of YarAdua’s health crisis.Even his death didn’t end the confusion immediately .So Jonathan was drawing from his experience when he called for orderly transfer of power in Malawi.
President Jonathan also prayed for the peaceful repose of late President Bingu Wa Mutharika’s soul.
