The National Chairman of the Progressive Peoples Alliance PPA, Chief Sam Nkire has said that PPA will never again lend its support to anybody who is not a member of the party in any future presidential election. Speaking at the end of the party’s NWC meeting in Abuja, Chief Sam Nkire said PPA was full of regret for endorsing the PDP candidate in the last presidential election, having realised that PDP was a party that strongly believed in ‘winner take all’. The PPA national chairman said the party’s greatest concern was the poor state of roads in country especially in the south east zone as well as the spate of insecurity in the land. According to Nkire, PPA would rather go it alone in the future than support a party that would turn out to be insensitive to the plight of the masses.
On the party’s plan towards 2015, Nkire said PPA would soon be reactivated in all the 774 local governments in the country were the party had formidable structures before some of its governors, legislators, and patrons left the party. He was of the hope that many of the members who left the PPA, including governors and members of the National assembly would soon return.
The chairman’s comment on the party’s plan for 2015 confirms Newsdiaryonline.com reports that efforts have been stepped up to reposition it.It has also been reported that clerics, traditional rulers, politicians, youth and businessmen have been urging ex Governor Orji Kalu to return to politics to strengthen PPA as a platform to advance Igbo cause within Nigeria. Though Kalu has refused to give in to what a PPA source said is the pressure on the ex governor, some observers believe he is one of those who may play a key role as the 2015 presidential race hots up.Newsdiaryonline.com has learnt that ‘strong’ politicians from other geo-political zones have been reaching out to Kalu already.
Meanwhile, the PPA National Chairman, Chief Nkire has lent his support to the call by the ACN leader Bola Tinubu for scrapping of the Senate as one of the cost saving measures that will help improve the lives of the masses. Speaking in Abuja Nkire said the PDP controlled Federal government would be deceiving Nigerians if it says it has difficulty knowing how and where to cut cost of running government. The PPA boss said government must have the will to reduce costs not only from the legislature but also from both the executive and judiciary in order to be able to provide the poor with the basic things of life such as security, food and shelter.
Chief Nkire said people in government should not wait for more Nigerians to die of hunger or be killed or displaced before realising the need to cut down on their excesses. He said it was also time to take a second look at the size and structure of government not only at federal level but at the state and local government levels in order reduce wastages by officials of government which prevent the majority of Nigerians from being protected and taken care of, by government institutions such as the police and hospitals due to lack of funds to buy equipment and medicine.
