A truck driver on Tuesday crushed a man to death and left three others in serious critical condition when he rammed his truck into passengers at the ever busy Kano road by Ahmadu Bello bus stop, in Kaduna metropolis.
The truck loaded with assorted fruits was moving towards Kaduna south when the driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the waiting passengers at the bus stop, thus creating confusion and panic.
One person was confirmed dead instantly while three others who sustained serious injuries were later taken by the police to St Gerard’s hospital where they are currently receiving treatment.
Confirming the incident the Police Public Relations Officer, Kaduna state Police Command, SP Aminu Lawan, said the driver of the truck is already in police custody, while the injured ones are receiving treatment at the hospital.
The PPRO also confirmed that contrary to speculations ,only one person was killed in the accident. He also called on traders and commuters, especially at the Kano road junction to always keep away from overcrowded spots and intruding into the main road.
On what caused the accident, the police spokesperson, said there was the probability of brake failure or that the truck driver was trying to maneuver out of some traffic jams or sleeping while driving due to tiredness. All these according to SP Lawan are allegations that the police would thoroughly investigate and charge the suspect accordingly.
However, families of some of the victims called on the government and security agents to ensure that the driver is brought to justice because they believe the accident was an avoidable one as it was as a result of carelessness on the part of the driver.
When this reporter visited the hospital where the victims were receiving treatment, some of the victims were still in unconscious state and one who was able to mutter a word, thanked Allah for sparing his life.
