Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko has admonished Journalists in the Nigeria to see their profession as a sacred duty.
Speaking as the Chairman of the occasion at the opening of the 2018 National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Sokoto, Saturday, Wamakko who was represented by Alhaji Isa Bajini Galadunchi charged Journalists on responsible practice.
“You should see Journalism as a sacred duty between you, God and mankind. You should also cherish and safeguard your responsibility, as well as avoid sensationalism.
“Decorum is highly needed in the coverage and reportage of all events in the country,” he stressed.
While calling on Journalists to uphold objectivity and accuracy in their reportage, Wamakko observed that “doing so diligently would provide the needed impetus for national development.”
Also speaking, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal underscored the crucial roles Journalists had played in the nation’s pre-independence struggles, as well as in entrenching democracy.
He expressed deep concern with the prevailing security situation across Nigeria and advocated for the review of the country’s security architecture, as well as the operational strategies of the security agencies.
“There is a seeming justification for state police. Governors should be having some measure of control of security agencies,” Tambuwal said.
NUJ President, Abdulwaheed Odusile said that the meeting would brainstorm on the prevailing issues affecting the Union, its members and Nigeria, with a view to proffer plausible solutions.
Alhaji Odusile also commended the state government for being media-friendly and vowed to ensure that, the members operate objectively, in line with national interests.
The state Chairman of the Union, Zonal Vice President and Secretary, Zone ”A”, Isa Abubakar Shuni, Yusuf Idris and Shehu Ahmed, respectively lauded the support of the state government to Journalists in the state.
