The Sokoto state Commissioner, Alhaji Murtala Mani has disclosed that the Command had recovered 948 guns under the state amnesty programme and police operations in last 24 months.

Addressing a news conference on Wednesday, he said that the weapons which were both recovered and surrendered included AK47, double and single barrel and locally fabricated guns with 1,200 ammunition.

Mani said that while some guns were surrendered during the amnesty initiative that was aimed at discouraging criminality as well as encouraging peaceful coexistence in the state, some were recovered during the course of fire exchange between criminal elements and men of the Command.

He further disclosed that some armed men voluntarily surrendered their weapons in recognition of the importance of amnesty initiative and that their nefarious activities were being monitored at all points across the state.

As a measure to stop arms proliferation in the state, Mani said that the Command would sanction manufacturers of locally made weapons.
