Maid in court for theft of employer’s lace materials worth N206,000

The Police on Monday arraigned a house maid Angela Igbar, in a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos over alleged theft of employer’s seven George lace materials valued at N206,000.

The defendant, 22, is standing trial on a count charge of theft to which he however, pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, ASP Fidelis Dike, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Nov. 18, at 12 noon at No. 24, Ikoyi Cresent, Ikoyi Lagos.

Dike said that the defendant, who was employed in April, left the house in November before her employer, Mrs Caroline Enwonwu, came back from work and took the George lace materials with her.

He said effort to locate her whereabouts proved abortive as her phone was switched off.

Dike added that a week later, Igbar was arrested and she took the police to her boyfriend’s place at Mowe, Ogun State, where five of the materials were recovered.

The offence contravenes Section 287 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, which stipulates seven years imprisonment for anyone found guilty.

The Magistrate, Mr T. A. Anjorin-Ajose granted the defendant N100,000 bail with two  sureties in like sum.

Anjorin-Ajose ordered that one of the sureties must be a relative of the defendant and the other a civil servant.

He adjourned the case until Dec. 17 for mention. (NAN)
